Student Leadership

The Student Leadership program is an integral part of our strategy to achieve our school vision “Together we empower global citizens”.

Our school offers a diverse range of leadership opportunities including the opportunity for Year 5 & 6 students to nominate for leadership program positions. The leadership program promotes the skills, values and attitudes needed for effective leadership to make a positive contribution to our school community.

The leadership program has four components; Student Councillors; Peer Mediators; Environmental Advocates; Faction Captains and Vice Captains. Each group has a teacher mentor.

Each of these leadership groups has a slightly different but complementary focus:

Student Councillors

To develop leadership skills to improve student welfare by fostering a safe, caring environment and by presenting students’ views on the school community’s decisions.

Peer Mediators

To use mediation skills to foster a harmonious playground environment where students feel safe and respected.

Environmental Advocates

To use their collaborative and leadership skills to promote school programs that foster environmental sustainability.

Faction Captains and Vice Captains

To develop leadership and organisational skills which contribute to student welfare by promoting cooperation, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle.

It is our strong belief that student leadership is an important part of the tapestry of Rossmoyne Primary School and helps to promote our four school values of Integrity, Respect, Courage and Belonging.

In addition to these formal leadership positions we have additional positions to promote student voice and well-being. These include Well-being Advocates, Year level representatives and Library Club leaders.

Year Level Representatives

Each year two students from each year group (Years 1-5) are elected by their peers to gather feedback from their classmates and present it at termly meetings with the student Well-being Advocates and Well-being teacher coordinators. This information is forwarded to the school administration who respond appropriately and action recommendations if required.

Well-being Advocates

Well-being Advocates are student leaders who promote a positive and supportive school environment. They assist in a range of responsibilities including supporting Year Level Representatives, reviewing suggestions from the student feedback box, writing certificates, and helping with the organisation of events such as R U OK? Day. Advocates collect fundraising money, distribute materials for special days, assist with health and wellbeing displays, and make public announcements. Students interested in this role are invited to self-nominate by writing about what well-being means to them, why it is important, and why they would be a suitable advocate.

Library Club Leaders

Library Club Leaders facilitate positive student relationships and encourage cooperation through games and craft activities during lunch time sessions twice a week.
